Pray. Pray even if you have no god.

What I see increasingly is that somehow, some way—I haven’t the first idea how—knowledge work must be independent of political and financial dependence. Lies kill. They kill with the pandemic. They kill in Ukraine. They are already leading to mass extinctions with climate change. Where they do not kill, they threaten to kill on a massive scale in a civil war. We see the mortal threat to academic freedom.[1] Governments must not control “truth,” but neither may capitalists. Our failure to solve this problem will be our ruin.

Ukraine

Given Vladimir Putin’s insanity,[2] I was wondering if the “humanitarian corridors” for civilians to escape Ukrainian cities that Russia had agreed to[3] would in fact be safe. And indeed they weren’t:[4] “We have no illusions here, we are sitting across the [negotiating] table from people who want to exterminate us.”[5]

Pray, pray even if you have no god to pray to, that I am wrong about Putin’s intentions,[6] for I see no light at the end of this tunnel for Ukraine, for the West, for the world. Or rather, the light that I see is that radioactive flash that precedes the mushroom cloud.
