So this[1] will be an attempt to make Pennsylvania Turnpike Route 43 useful. It goes from pretty much nowhere to pretty much nowhere. The extension will move one of the endpoints to another nowhere.

This after completion of the Southern Beltway (Pennsylvania Turnpike Route 576),[2] God knows how much concrete and how many millions or billions of dollars later, all to save—wait for it—zero time.

Yup, taking the Southern Beltway from Interstate 79 to the Pittsburgh Airport is unlikely to save you any time. It will cost you money—not a lot, but the locals will howl like you’re taking their last nickel—but it won’t save you time because the route bows out so far from a straight line that you might as well just stay on I-79 and take the Parkway (I-376) to the airport. The virtue of the Southern Beltway is like that of the Mon/Fayette Expressway: If you’re looking for some quiet, fast roadway, you’ll often find it on the turnpike.

The Mon/Fayette does, by contrast, save you time, mainly because the alternative roads are all two-lane surface roads that wander through the Appalachian Mountains. But because it doesn’t go anywhere from anywhere, it still remains very, very lightly used.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike system, however, seems to be an entity unto itself, effectively answerable only to itself. I’m not seeing that anyone tells it what to do or not do.

They uniformly condemn these crimes and express their regrets to his victims,[2] pretty much as if that’s what they’ve all been told what to say. Perhaps, in some cases, it’s the truth. But I’m wondering in how many cases it isn’t.

This Financial Times article is worth it for the pictures alone, imagining San Francisco reverted to nature. In my last edition, I expressed some concern in speaking of the South of Market Area (SOMA) that I hadn’t been there in a few years so didn’t know what it looked like today.[1] Tabby Kinder and George Hammond write mostly of the Tenderloin and pretty much confirm that that neighborhood is still hell.[2] The depiction of homeless camped behind the Westfield Mall with easy access to its elevators[3] pretty much tells me that SOMA hasn’t improved much.

The problems of these areas long predate the pandemic, so I suspect that part of London Breed’s problem is that she may be treating these problems as if they were something new.

Dialing back out, if San Francisco indeed collapses in the way those pictures imagine, it and the surrounding area can serve as a monument to high technology hubris and arrogance.

If you want a sense of how very, very different the white Christian nationalist universe is from our own, I’m not sure I can offer a better demonstration than a massive Christian Post report on reaction to the Durham report,[4] which was critical of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for investigating Donald Trump’s relationship with Russia.[5]

We should note that John Durham was appointed by Donald Trump attorney general Bill Barr, when Trump’s fealty requirement had already been well established, and was therefore not expected to produce a favorable report.[6] Even so, the white Christian nationalist reaction[7] to the report is completely over the top.

So Los Angeles County had an election. And Los Angeles County elected itself a new sheriff. And it looks like the new Los Angeles County Sheriff is taking the “deputy gang” problem a little more seriously than did former Sheriff Alex Villanueva.[8] Which is a big oops if you’re a white supremacist gangster who’s been counting on Villanueva’s attitude to hold sway. But for the white supremacist gangster unions, it’s all just standard operating procedure to resist accountability in every way possible:

Before [Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert] Luna fired off his Thursday morning email ordering his deputies to comply, the unions representing rank-and-file deputies put out mass texts and Facebook posts telling their members to call the union before responding to the inspector general’s letter.

One union — the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs — also sent a message to its members, advising anyone who received a letter from Huntsman’s office to respond only by sending an ALADS form letter to their supervisor, describing the OIG letter as a “threat” and asking for direction as to whether deputies should actually respond to it.[9]

And naturally, it remains to be seen if all this makes a bit of difference as the gangsters may continue to attempt to obstruct the investigation and Luna “has not yet formally accepted any of the 27 recommendations to eradicate deputy gangs that were proposed more than two months ago by the Civilian Oversight Commission.”[10]

My groundhog neighbor had three babies in tow crossing the lawn this morning. Just so we all know what’s really important.

My landlord worries about his (actually his wife’s) tulips but honestly, I’ve never seen a groundhog anywhere near his tulips; I always see them rummaging in the grass or running to a bramble where I’m pretty sure their den is.

A Washington Post report raises a possibility that the report—from leaked U.S. intelligence[3]—that Yevgeny Prigozhin offered Ukrainians Russian troop locations[4] is an attempt to smear Prigozhin.[5] Prigozhin hardly needs smearing, but the idea that such leaked intelligence, which so far seems to have been the real thing, would be a ‘hoax’ in just this one case seems a bit over the top.

Meanwhile, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas’ woes in persuading companies to decline deals circumventing sanctions on Russia will surely sound familiar to anyone who has read George Seldes’ account of U.S. corporations who couldn’t resist more deals with Nazi Germany.[6] The simple fact is that capitalists are in business to make money even if, as Vladimir Lenin is alleged to have suggested, it means selling their hangman a rope to hang them with.[7]

But those (including me) who wonder how Vladimir Putin can continue this war will find support for their doubts in a Washington Post op-ed:

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a longtime [Yevgeny] Prigozhin ally, has now appeared to break with the Wagner chief, harshly criticizing his threats to withdraw from the front. As a result, the three principal Russian forces in Bakhmut — the Wagner Group, Kadyrov’s Chechen militias and the regular army — are openly feuding with each other as Ukrainian troops advance.

Meanwhile, [Vladimir] Putin has conspicuously failed to explain to the public how his security forces failed to prevent two drones from reaching the Kremlin and neglected to thwart the car-bomb attack on a key Russian warmonger, Zakhar Prilepin.

Former Putin speechwriter Abbas Gallyamov told me the Kremlin is “shaking.”[8]

All this pales, really, before the spectacular failure of Russian forces in Ukraine,[9] but it can only add to the question of how much longer Putin can last.

Brown University researchers, in a report released Monday, draw on U.N. data and expert analyses to attempt to calculate the minimum number of excess deaths attributable to the war on terrorism, across conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia and Yemen — impacts “so vast and complex that” ultimately, “they are unquantifiable,” the researchers acknowledge.

The accounting, so far as it can be measured, puts the toll at 4.5 million to 4.6 million — a figure that continues to mount as the effects of conflict reverberate. Of those fatalities, the report estimates, some 3.6 million to 3.7 million were “‘indirect deaths” caused by the deterioration of economic, environmental, psychological and health conditions.[10]

I mostly remember the blocks in San Francisco of Powell Street between Market and Geary Streets, that is apparently now mostly vacant,[12] for the Woolworth’s on Market that I think has been gone for a while (it appears vacant on Google Street View) and a bunch of shops offering goods (including electronics) that made no sense to buy at those shops and that aimed to rip off tourists (fools and their money) who wouldn’t know or perhaps even care even to go to a fucking department store where the prices are still exorbitant, just not so exorbitant as at these shops. I guess those stores didn’t survive the pandemic—good riddance.

A couple levels down at Woolworth’s you could find an entrance to the Powell Street Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. On the other side was the Emporium, which closed long ago and also had a BART entrance; it was replaced by the Westfield Mall that now has a problem with homeless people shitting in its elevators and included a Nordstrom’s that has shut down.[13]

At the end of the day, we got to start somewhere. San Francisco is not in the doom loop that everyone says it is.[14]

I have to tell you that sinking six million bucks into that corridor[15] only makes a “doom loop”[16] seem more likely.

Yes, the cable cars that are actually useful start there. So, too, really, does the Tenderloin and South of Market Area (SOMA). SOMA is pretty diverse; historically, it had a lot of what they call single-room occupancy (SRO) hotels that offered homes to folks who couldn’t hack the regular rental market. It did attract some technology companies even during the dot-com boom; Twitter headquarters is on the southeast corner of 10th and Market Streets. It’s been a few years since I’ve been there, so I don’t know what it all looks like now, but I gather the Tenderloin, which had many more SRO hotels, is still very much a troubled neighborhood.[17] And the vacancy rate going out on Market Street (which separates SOMA from the Tenderloin) from Powell was probably the number one reason why San Francisco passed a tax on vacant storefronts.[18]

So between the tourist ripoff shops and the adjoining neighborhoods, I’m pretty sure this corridor is gonna be a waste of six million bucks.

Pieces that don’t add up in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Imperialism

Russia

Ukraine

Fig. 1. “Destroyed Russian military vehicles located on the main street Khreshchatyk are seen as part of the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine in Kyiv, August 24.” Photograph by Gleb Garanich for Reuters, August 24, 2022,[1] fair use.

There is only one name I have seen put forward in speculation about a coup to depose Vladimir Putin: Yevgeny Prigozhin.[2] Suffice it to say, Prigozhin would be unlikely to improve on Putin. Not that we wouldn’t pay attention anyway just for the bizarreness of Prigozhin’s unrelenting and harsh criticism of the Russian invasion effort in a regime that is, um, selective about what dissent it tolerates.[3]

But because this possibility exists, we have to pay attention to the relationship between the two men and to that between Prigozhin and the Kremlin. An article in the Toronto Star is one of a very few that address even one of these relationships in the present context.[4]

In such a tightly controlled regime, the right to speak freely and critically has traditionally been one granted by Putin alone. So Prigozhin’s virulent and repeated criticisms of the Russian military’s battlefield failings have confounded those trying to understand how the man who used his catering and restaurant businesses to build political connections at the highest levels is still standing.

With Russia’s military efforts stalled and on the eve of a Ukrainian counteroffensive aimed at retaking occupied territory, only one explanation makes sense to [Abbas] Gallyamov: “[Vladimir] Putin depends on [Yevgeny] Prigozhin more than Prigozhin depends on Putin.” . . .

Writing for the Royal United Services Institute in March, Ukrainian military intelligence analyst Oleksandr Danylyuk said that a prolonged public spat between Prigozhin and the military leadership could be a plot to have the defence minister and chief of staff replaced, or to convince Ukrainian military planners and intelligence analysts that the Russians are in disarray.

Danylyuk, an expert in Russian hybrid warfare and its special services, also argued that Prigozhin’s angry, madman persona “also benefits Putin personally, as it supports his strategic narrative that regime change in Russia would also be bad for the West, given that even more aggressive individuals may come to power.”[5]

If Russia indeed is hamstrung for manpower and ammunition,[6] then Putin needs Prigozhin’s soldiers. They’ll both need ammunition but that remains the case whether Prigozhin is in command of the Wagner Group or not. And I think if Putin doubts the ability of Kremlin military leadership, he’ll want as many ‘competent’ commanders as he can get (whether we agree that Prigozhin is in fact competent is another question, pretty close behind whether Putin does something meaningful about the Kremlin military leadership that has, by all accounts, failed so spectacularly).

But there is no debating [Yevgeny] Prigozhin’s bitter frustration with the grinding fight in Bakhmut. He has complained, publicly and privately, that the Russian Defense Ministry has not given his fighters the ammunition and other resources they need to succeed. Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, has seen some of the bloodiest fighting of the war. Over the past few months, in a grinding back and forth measured by city blocks, Ukrainian and Russian forces have taken steep casualties.[7]

It’s time, really time, to start watching for pieces that don’t add up. There is of course the entire botched-up war itself; what this war says about Russian military corruption, preparedness, and capability; and of Putin’s czarist fantasies. All really rather quite mind-boggling enough.

But get to questions like that of Putin and (a treasonous) Prigozhin,[8] and how an army can possibly expect to fight without bullets,[9] and yeah, damn it, I’ve got some pieces that aren’t adding up.

Russia investigation

Special counsel John Durham [tapped in 2019 by President Donald Trump’s attorney general, William P. Barr] has issued a long-awaited report that sharply criticizes the FBI for investigating the 2016 Trump campaign based on “raw, unanalyzed, and uncorroborated intelligence” — a conclusion that may fuel rather than end partisan debate about politicization within the Justice Department and FBI. . . .

The report, coming almost four years to the day since Durham’s assignment began, will probably be derided by Democrats as the end of a partisan boondoggle. Republicans will have to wrestle with a much-touted investigation that has cost taxpayers more than $6.5 million and didn’t send a single person to jail, even though Trump once predicted that Durham would uncover the “crime of the century.” . . .

Much of the FBI conduct described by the Durham report was previously known and had been denounced in a 2019 report by the Justice Department’s inspector general, which did not find “documentary or testimonial evidence of intentional misconduct.”

Durham goes further in his criticism, however, arguing that the FBI rushed to investigate Trump in a case known as Crossfire Hurricane, even as it proceeded cautiously on allegations related to then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. . . .

Durham’s final report comes against a backdrop of two failed prosecutions. Igor Danchenko — a private researcher who was a primary source for a dossier of allegations about Trump’s alleged ties to Russia — was acquitted in October of lying to the FBI about where he got his information. Durham personally argued much of the government’s case in that trial, in federal court in Alexandria.

Last year, a jury in D.C. federal court acquitted cybersecurity lawyer Michael Sussmann, whom Durham also had charged with lying to the FBI. A former FBI lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith, was sentenced to one year of probation after admitting in a 2020 plea deal with Durham that he had altered a government email used to justify secret surveillance of a former Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page.[10]

Manhood in Gaza

Imperialism

Israel

Palestine

Fig. 1. Graphic by Al Jazeera, May 15, 2022,[1] fair use.

It’s past time Zionists started noticing this:

The cycle of limited battles in recent years against Islamic Jihad, the second-largest terror group in the Gaza Strip, is sounding like a broken record: Time and again Israel has killed senior members of the group after attacks on the country, leading to rocket fire for several days, until a truce is mediated by Egypt.[2]

Now if they would also notice how much these killing orgies resemble U.S. gun nuts’ inability to distinguish between their guns and their penises.

But the bitter fact is that, even with its key leaders dead, weapons stores blown up, anti-tank cells thwarted, and innumerable rocket launchers targeted, the “murderous organization” did manage to muster an “answer” through four full days of conflict, and was still firing rocket salvos at Israel in the minutes before and after a ceasefire finally went into effect on Saturday night.

Speaking hours before the ceasefire was agreed to on Saturday, Israel’s National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi also stated that Israel had achieved its goals “in the first seconds” of the operation, and then acknowledged rather plaintively: “Everything that’s been going on since requires us to act because they’re firing on us.”[3]

Which is to say that none of this chest-thumping achieves what would be a reasonable objective: stopping the rocket attacks.[4]

With a force estimated at “only” some 10,000 and relatively limited rocket supplies, targeted constantly by the mighty [Israel Defense Forces], Islamic Jihad nevertheless managed to keep up to half of Israel close to or inside sealed rooms and bomb shelters for five days.[5]

When a repeated and sustained policy does not achieve a reasonable objective but is adhered to nonetheless, a question arises as to what objective is being achieved. And far too much of this has the feel of asserting a remarkably toxic masculinity, firing advanced weapons at civilians when the opponent (who is not the same as the civilians) has only crude weapons with which to reply. Israel isn’t solving its problem this way and this should have been beyond amply clear long before now. My question is whether it in fact wants to solve this problem, or instead to thump its chest, to assert its manhood.

Oh, you were expecting champagne in your mimosa for Mother’s Day? Sorry, all I have is hubris

On Mother’s Day, we seem to be seeing something of the forces of evil in retreat. But it’s early in all of this, even if criminal charges against Donald Trump have been far too slow in coming—and in most cases, have yet to appear.

Tucker Carlson says he’s going to do a show on Twitter, but Twitter isn’t Fox News and isn’t really that sort of a platform. I’m critical of Jen Psaki for weighing in where she has, as far as I know, zero particular expertise, but it is indeed not clear that Carlson’s followers will follow him there[1] for what so far appear to be less than three-minute installments; on the other hand, he has 7.5 million followers on Twitter already.[2] Yes, it’s a retreat, but Carlson’s war isn’t over yet and we have yet to see how this plays out.

Donald Trump can rage all he likes[3] but he faces criminal charges relating to hush money paid to Stormy Daniels,[4] a jury has found him civilly liable for sexual assault,[5] and Fox News just settled a defamation suit over his stolen election claims.[6] It’s the barest of beginnings of accountability for Trump and it’s far from clear that he’ll ever be held fully accountable; I still will believe there are other charges when there are other charges.

Meanwhile, Bakhmut is not going Vladimir Putin’s way[7] as Russian forces seem to be short of both fighters and ammunition.[8] Again, Russia isn’t out of Ukraine until it’s out of Ukraine and Putin isn’t out of office until he’s out of office.

My mother has not had the wretched experience of this life I have had; she does not share my pessimism, or at least not all of it. She will likely take the above as a sign of hope. But I have seen defeat snatched from the jaws of victory too often. Especially with the Democrats.

The latest fighting between Palestinians and Israelis serves as 1) a diversion from controversy over Binyamin Netanyahu’s judicial subordination plans that 2) makes protesters appear disloyal.

The fighting, which began on Tuesday [May 9, 2023] and has seen nearly 1,000 rockets fired at Israel, has led to the cancelation of this week’s mass protests against the Israeli government in Tel Aviv. The protests [against the Binyamin Netanyahu government’s judicial subordination plans] have taken place every Saturday night for much of the year and regularly draw tens of thousands of people.[2]

Yevgeny Prigozhin is back to claiming he hasn’t received promised munitions and threatening to leave Bakhmut. Ukraine appears to have pushed Russia’s 72nd Brigade back two kilometers in a battle that has seemed to be about inches clawed back and forth for months.[2] This, as the U.S. claims Russia needs both more ammunition and fighters to mount any offensive at all.[3]

I strongly suspect the U.S. has underestimated the depletion of Russian forces. I think those around Vladimir Putin dare not tell him the truth. And I think Putin’s humiliation draws nearer.

Silicon Valley

I think what’s most interesting about financial newspapers covering social inequality is that they’re covering social inequality.

Of course, they’ll soft-pedal accusations against capitalists’ motivations. This is their audience, after all, and in show business, you must always flatter your audience.

Of course, they’ll shed a crocodile tear for the working class or the poor, whose exploitation and abuse they help enable, if only to appear “objective” and “balanced.”

And this isn’t the sort of thing I would normally pay much attention to. But in this case,[4] it suggests a certain introspection, even if barely past the “Oh My God! People really think that about us!” stage. (As if, somehow, we, the rest of us, wouldn’t have noticed that yawning gulf between what is possible for us and what is possible for them.[5])

But in his review of a book which, he suggests, is too simplistic in a class division between the rich and everybody else, Richard Waters cannot escape observing that the optics of widening social inequality are a problem.[6] But against a context of debacles like the Silicon Valley Bank collapse so soon after we should have learned the lessons of the 2008 Financial Crisis, and like the COVID-19 pandemic, whose handling was unsatisfactory whether you are on the left or the right, and recent wars whose outcomes have fallen far short of vindication, and the necessary moral justification for a hierarchical authoritarian system of social organization that leaders should be more competent and more moral than the rest of us looks pretty nearly eviscerated. Or that the emperor wears no clothes.

The emperor may have no clothes but s/he has guns and lots of bought-off people to shoot them. This, of course, reduces our hierarchical authoritarian system of social organization to what anarchists say it is, with authority predicated simply on violence or the threat thereof and therefore illegitimate. It’s precisely the appearance that elites sought to avoid, for the forces available to suppress a population will always necessarily be a fraction of its size, and the constant din of violent uprisings disrupts elite intentions and diverts elite resources.[7]

Finally – finally – this oft-accused predator [Donald Trump] would be held accountable for at least some fraction of his misdeeds.

Not for rape, which is what [E. Jean] Carroll testified happened in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room 27 years ago, but for sexual assault and for defamation – and for $5m.

No, it’s not enough. Not enough for wrecking this particular woman’s ability to live a trauma-free life. Not enough for causing immeasurable harm to so many others.

But enough so that Trump can be portrayed as a sexual abuser.[1]
