Reopening schools is asinine

    • I hadn’t realized just how poorly paid restaurant workers are, on a tipped minimum wage. They say they’re bearing the brunt of the reopening[1] and I have to say, a couple times I ate at Burgatory, and I was seated at the bar, immediately across from where a worker washed dishes or prepared drinks. We weren’t even close to being properly socially distanced and it isn’t permitted under the present orders but do I believe the accounts in this story?[2] Hell, yes.

Pandemic

It’s still mostly bars and restaurants where most people are getting infected with the novel coronavirus in Allegheny County, but private parties are increasingly cropping up in contact tracing efforts.[3] From what I can see, driving by, people flatly are not social distancing at these events and are not wearing masks. Period. And hospitalizations, the count of which lags behind that of cases, seem to be spiking.[4]

And as for that insanity about opening schools?[5] Forget it. This is a really, really bad, asinine idea. Because whatever previous research says, you know the research I said to treat with caution,[6] it’s looking more and more like children might be able to spread the novel coronavirus[7] and it’s crucial to remember first, that we aren’t just talking about the kids themselves, but everyone they come into contact with, at home, at school, or anywhere else, inevitably including people who are vulnerable; and second, that if we can’t even get adults to wear masks[8] and socially distance, then we sure as hell aren’t going to be able to get kids to.

Poor Donald Trump. Nobody wants to delay the election.

Donald Trump’s idea to delay the election[1] landed like a cold turd in Congress. It very much appears that this was another step in a plan to discredit the election before it even happens.[2]

One of the most dramatic critiques of Trump’s tweet came from Steven G. Calabrese, a co-founder of the conservative Federalist Society, who wrote in an opinion piece published in The New York Times Thursday that the idea was “fascistic” and “grounds for the president’s immediate impeachment.”[3]

I’ve said this many times and I can’t stress it enough: The many refutations to what Trump says, in this case,[4] and in every other case, are irrelevant. He speaks to his largely authoritarian populist and social conservative base and not to anyone else. They listen to him and not to anyone else.

An earlier order prohibiting indoor dining and alcohol consumption took effect on July 10[2] and the incubation period is usually about five days.[3] That order has been rescinded and replaced by a modestly more lenient order from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania limiting bars and restaurants to 25 percent capacity,[4] and a new Allegheny County order mandating a closing time of 11 pm.[5] The number of cases in Allegheny County appears to have crested, as shown in figure 2, rendering the claim in this photograph inaccurate.

With all the Trumpsters around Pittsburgh, there just had to be a local angle on Donald Trump’s hydroxychloroquine Kool-Aid.[1] Well, here you go:

Residents of a Beaver County nursing home [Brighton Rehabilitation and Wellness Center] that is the site of one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the country were given an experimental drug [hydroxychloroquine] without approval from the [Pennsylvania] state health department, inspection records show.[2]

But you know, the elderly are expendable,[3] right? They’re just lining up to offer themselves[4] as human sacrifices to the capitalist god,[5] right? It’s apparently not known if the nursing home actually managed to kill anybody, though the drug is known to cause an irregular heartbeat.[6]

Oh, and about masks. The Washington Post records widespread opposition to wearing masks and notes that being Republican or a Trumpster has something to do with it. But the story really fails to explain the opposition,[7] with an earlier story claiming that “[a]ntipathy to masks is deeply ingrained in American culture, unlike in some Asian countries, where many people wear them whenever they are in public, as protection against bugs and air pollution.”[8]

Bullshit. Where is this history of antipathy to wearing masks? If this antipathy in fact exists, then how the fuck do we explain Halloween? And if it is indeed “cultural,” or as that earlier story suggests, rooted in opposition to the Ku Klux Klan,[9] then why is opposition most prominent among white supremacists and present only among conservatives assholes? The subject hadn’t even come up, probably since the Spanish flu in 1918. Psychopaths have pulled this out of their asses possibly since if we’re going to kill grandma,[10] we’d best get it done quickly—and I do hear suggestions that we should let the coronavirus “sweep through” the population from my passengers, as if “herd immunity” to COVID-19 was a thing[11]—so she isn’t an issue anymore.

And once again our neoliberal refusal to take care of human beings[12] rears its head as COVID-19 hits poor Latinx communities in California especially hard.[13]

The often-armed anti-lockdown protests often had a white supremacist feel to them,[14] so it shouldn’t be at all surprising that armed groups are showing up in opposition to Black Lives Matter protests.[15]

Oregon’s governor has capitulated, promising a stronger state and local police presence around federal property in exchange for a promise to withdraw federal forces.[16] This is the sort of move that state and local officials will likely expect to enable them to return to their earlier plan of allowing the Black Lives Matter protests to fizzle while they implement the least possible amount of change in response to those protests.

This[17] sounds like good news, but there’s a point that confuses me:

Since the 1950s the property, known as Rancho Aguila, had been owned by Axel Adler, a Swedish immigrant. After his death in 2004, his family put it up for sale for $15m. After years-long negotiations, the Western Rivers Conservancy, a Portland-based environmental group, etched a deal to purchase the land and hand it over to the US Forest Service.

Working on behalf of the tribe, the conservancy secured a $4.5m grant from the California Natural Resources Agency to cover the land purchase and studies of the area.[18]

How does handing property over the U.S. Forest Service,[19] an agency devoted to forestry, return it to the Esselen Tribe?

Protests

In general, what can be said of the protests is they are indeed becoming more violent, that Donald Trump is getting his campaign footage,[1] but most people will know that it is Trump who escalated the situation.

A protest in Austin turned fatal on Saturday when a driver navigated his vehicle toward the marchers and fired at 28-year-old protester Garrett Foster, who had brought an assault rifle to a march, police said.

The driver — fired upon by a third armed man at the scene — was not injured, officials said, and police released him while their investigation continued.[2]

Summer in Pittsburgh

Last year, it rained. Oh, how it rained. And thundered and lightninged. It seemed like there were weather warnings nearly every day for a while there. And I never got a chance to see how picturesque Pittsburgh is in the summertime.

But it really is spectacular. And lush with greenery, best enjoyed from the comfort of an air conditioned car. Because it’s fucking hot out there and even when it isn’t hot, it’s humid.

I have a lot to pull together today and it isn’t quite there yet. So it’s here, for the moment at least, and really as well in the issue last night.

Pandemic

George Monbiot writes in and principally of Britain. He does not, in this column, mention the U.S. except in reference to a trade deal that Boris Johnson is negotiating as a sad substitute for the European Union. And he relies on polls[1] which, due to a ludicrously and beyond unacceptably low response rate,[2] I do not trust.

But I wonder the degree to which what Monbiot writes is true in the U.S. It’s weird here, where the “normal” that he disparages and believes people do not wish to return to, but that elites (functionalist conservatives) are all too anxious to return to,[3] appears to have an ideological component.

Monbiot seems to be referring to an elite and intellectually utterly discredited neoliberalism[4] as that “normal.”[5] But here in the U.S., I would think there are, as well, paleoconservative (including white supremacist), authoritarian populist (“Tea Party”), and social conservative (principally conservative evangelical Protestant) elements among the general population that desperately want to assert their own ideological “normal.”

It’s weird here, and really rather sickening.

Protests

From last night (July 25):

It’s been almost 2 months and there’s rioting in at least 3 cities tonight, this movement has outlasted the great upheaval of 1877 and only has 2 larger continuous antecedents in US history, the revolutionary period of 67-71 and the general strike of the enslaved + reconstruction

Having spent five years producing a history of rioting in the US I really really can’t quite believe how truly monumental this uprising is, and I recognize that there is real historical possibility opening wider every day

Like for context 1877 upheaval was so severe it led to the creation of National Guard armories in every big city in America. In terms of sheer value of property destroyed 1877 (and LA 92 and Holy Week 68 and even Miami 81) may still be “larger” (it will take years to know)

but in terms of momentum and mvmt longevity we’re in incredibly historic times. If we can keep pushing now, soon everything becomes possible…

It can be easy in the middle of something to be awed by the power of a moment (to be clear, a beautiful feeling) and so overestimate, but just as easy to get acclimated to a level of conflict and so underestimate. I’m often guilty of the former, but still…[6]

I believe that when Vicky Osterweil refers to “67-71,”[7] she means the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, the antiwar, counterculture, and liberation movements of that era, which led to a decades-long backlash that has been visceral throughout my adult life and that spawned neoconservatism.[8]

I honestly don’t know how this plays and, indeed, it’s surely disingenuous to say the least for anyone to claim that they do know. But there’s certainly a lot happening, including the antiracism protests that Osterweil writes of, including Donald Trump’s response to those protests,[9] including a neoliberal refusal to adequately and compassionately address human need in an economic crisis,[10] and including a refusal by many to accept personal responsibility for helping to contain the coronavirus that propels that economic calamity.

She doth protest too much

I was bringing a passenger to the Comfort Inn on Banksville Road in Pittsburgh when we saw the flashing lights of police cars.

As we drew nearer, we could see there were several police cars and then that several Pittsburgh police officers had detained an older white woman. They were all wearing face masks. She wasn’t.

I can only speculate that the latter part of that was the cause of the confrontation. She was clearly indignant, perhaps even belligerent. On at least four occasions while I was watching, she attempted to walk away. Once, I saw the cops assume a formation to block her in. Each other time, a cop would grab her by the arm, each time, more forcefully.

I last saw her being put into the back of a police car, without handcuffs, and I had another order to get to, so I didn’t stay to watch the outcome.

Now, I suppose I am supposed to believe that people who resist wearing face masks are truly convinced of their righteousness, that they truly believe they are asserting constitutional rights.

I don’t believe it. Like that old restaurant on Market Street that advertised “the best breakfast in San Francisco” (and I was reliably assured it most certainly did not), if you really are superlative, you don’t need to assert it. And I think the anger and self-righteousness of those claiming a first amendment right to spread the novel coronavirus, to spread a too-often fatal COVID-19, similarly indicates a lack of certainty on the part of those who are most vociferous in their claims.

That older woman protests too much. And so do a few other people.
