It’s perfectly clear now. I’m worthless. Rejection is my entire experience with this society. It has hated me from the day I was born and it loves nothing more than to hate me.

It’s one thing to kill a man. It’s quite another to change the views of those who admired him. The good news for Vladimir Putin is that Yevgeny Prigozhin’s appeal seems limited to a relatively small number of hardliners.[1] The bad news for Putin is that that means a split in support for the Ukraine war.

[Yevgeny] Prigozhin’s death rids the Kremlin of one of its loudest and most dangerous critics, but it doesn’t address the root cause of the Wagner mutiny or of his popularity: frustration with Russian military failures and mounting casualties in Ukraine.[1]

A man to watch may be Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister whom Yevgeny Prigozhin wanted ousted:[2]

Questions over [Vladimir] Putin’s grip on power have caused some to wonder whether others in Russia’s security establishment, perhaps even [Sergei] Shoigu himself, had given the order to down [Yevgeny] Prigozhin’s plane.

Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian lawmaker who has since moved to Ukraine, where he helps coordinate Russian fighters opposed to [Vladimir] Putin, pointed out that Prigozhin’s plane went down just after Shoigu named a new commander of the Russian air force, which is also responsible for air-defense batteries.[3]

This would seem to suggest that the new commander immediately ordered Yevgeny Prigozhin’s plane shot down, but Prigozhin had many enemies and the U.S. is saying it wasn’t a surface-to-air missile that brought his plane down.[4] That would seem to suggest a bomb on board the plane, which would have had to be planted in advance, or, I suppose, some malfunction that could cause an explosion.

It doesn’t help that there are still different versions as to the cause of the crash. According to some independent military analysts and the majority of those posting on Wagner-linked social media, the plane was downed by Russian air defenses; others have suggested a blast onboard is to blame.[5]

The previous commander [of the Russian air force], Gen. Sergei Surovikin, who used to lead Russian forces in Ukraine, has been held in custody since the Wagner revolt, suspected of collusion with [Yevgeny] Prigozhin.

“[Sergei] Shoigu is taking revenge for the mutiny, and [Vladimir] Putin personally probably didn’t order this,” [Ilya] Ponomarev said.[6]

I’m not expecting to learn the full truth of what happened while Vladimir Putin is alive. And maybe not even after his death.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, it seems, is dead. This afternoon [August 23, 2023], his Embraer jet, with ten passengers on board, fell vertically from the sky after witnesses reported hearing two explosions. With uncharacteristic swiftness for the Russian state bureaucracy, the Kremlin’s aviation agency announced that Prigozhin was listed on the flight manifest within the hour. Three hours later, as responders sorted through the burning, body-strewn debris just north of Moscow, Telegram channels associated with Prigozhin’s private military company confirmed his death. Exactly two months after the Wagner leader announced his “March of Fairness” on Moscow, in what was broadly interpreted as an attempted coup, Prigozhin finally met his end.[1]

Lots of folks have commenced telling us they told us so. But now the question is whether Yevgeny Prigozhin is really dead, if he hasn’t somehow outsmarted Vladimir Putin’s henchmen. Putin had a broad smile on his face,[2] so I’m guessing he knows Prigozhin is really dead. But it’s just a guess.

Yesterday, while I was stomping on spotted lanternflies outside Cinnaholic, there were a lot of white supremacist gangster cars heading inbound code 3 (lights and siren) on Penn Avenue and on adjacent streets. Of course I had no idea what was going on. But there were a lot of them, both marked and unmarked, even a motorcycle gangster, over a protracted period—I’m guessing it was over at least a half hour.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood was terrified as thousands of shots were exchanged in an encounter that began as an eviction. It’s likely white supremcist gangsters finished off the man who was occupying a family home that had been sold but they aren’t saying how he died.[4]

The dead man, William Hardison, Jr., is hardly a sympathetic character. Based on statements attributed to him, it appears he was an adherent of the individual soverignty movement. He seems to have had a number of brushes with the law, including a previous eviction.[5]

Spotted lanternflies

I am without my car today and most of tomorrow. I got rear-ended a few months ago—a hit-and-run with the at-fault driver’s insurance company “defending” their client, meaning she almost certainly got away with it—and while the damage was largely invisible, there was about $1,500 worth, not counting the ceramic coat and rustproofing that I’m having to have redone on the repaired area (it’ll be over $1,600 and I guess we’ll just see if my insurance covers it).

So I wound up at Pittsburgh’s Cinnaholic—it’s a vegan cinnamon roll shop and, yes, it’s here—and having secured my cinnamon roll, I found myself smashing a lot of spotted lanternflies, near the shop but especially where I walked to meet an Uber to my next destination.

My Uber driver reported that she’d had the most luck stomping them from the side (I think she’s right). I am definitely noticing that natural selection seems to have favored the spotted lanternflies that will actually attempt to escape being smashed.

Place your bets! How long until Donald Trump violates the terms of his bond agreement in Georgia?

It will be amazing if Donald Trump actually complies with the terms of the bond agreement in the Georgia case. The terms require him to abstain from witness intimidation or any interference with the trial.[1] He’ll actually have to keep his fucking mouth shut.

Roman-Catholic Church

Sex

Fig. 1. “Lust, from the ‘Seven Deadly Sins.’” Etching by Léon Davent, circa 1550-1555, via the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Roman Catholic church some of my childhood friends (from when I lived in Pittsburgh as a child) attended now sports an electronic sign, which among other things, calls “chastity the pathway to human flourishing.” Really.

It takes some chutzpah for the Roman Catholic Church to push celibacy when there are so many lawsuits over pedophile priests that the San Francisco archdiocese has filed for bankruptcy.[2]

The spotted lanternflies are out in force around Pittsburgh. At least one lands on my car while I’m driving, nearly every day. As I’m about to publish this issue, I’m parked outside the Potomac Station Coffeehouse in Dormont and passers by have stomped on at least four of them (yes, even vegans should do this) in the time I’ve been here.
