Donald Trump is stupid and he has stupid lawyers—at this point, the only sort who will represent him. Lots of us just want to see Trump in an orange jumpsuit, doing hard time, though this particular trial is unlikely to result in that particular outcome. So we celebrate that.

But it’s worth noting that that’s not how our system of injustice is supposed to work.

The somewhat mystical idea is that truth emerges from a contest of theories about the evidence. For this to work, both sides must be competent, both sides must perform well. That’s not at all what’s happening here.

That [Donald] Trump is scheduled to testify after his two sons means the former president will get the brunt of their unanswered questions, said [Laurie] Levenson. The attorney general’s office has indicated it will rest its case after the Trump family, including Ivanka Trump, finish testifying.

“It’s going to box Trump in a bit,” Levenson said. “Will his children let him take the fall for it?”[1]
