Archie Bland has written a very smart newsletter on the whole OpenAI debacle. I couldn’t care much less about Sam Altman or the company; I was watching mainly because so many other people were. But Bland offers a summation of what little is known about what happened and why—there’s a tension between safety and innovation that Altman’s structure was meant to address and failed—and about the “great man” syndrome that Silicon Valley is exceptionally prone to.[1] Very little of this is unique to artificial idiocy: A lot is about ego and arrogance.
