I’m critical of my father for his abusive interpersonal relationships; he destroyed lives, including my own. But as an engineer, there can be no question he meant well. I don’t know that he saw the specific problem of streamlining riverflows making water run faster and thus enabling it to undermine bridges—he committed suicide in 2000, certainly long before I’d first heard of it—but I’m sure he would have.
