A requiem for a now-forgotten Arab Spring

Ishaan Tharoor today writes of Tunisia, the beginning of the Arab Spring, that has ended in dictatorship.[1] It was a speedy transition relative to the other countries I count as illiberal and seems to have reached culmination.

Pennsylvania

2022 election

This is probably the last loose end from Pennsylvania’s election in 2022, as Democrats have consolidated their control of the state House of Representatives[3] and elected a new speaker, Joanna McClinton, who replaces[4] Mark Rozzi, who had been elected in an unexpected show of bipartisanship.[5]

[Joanna McClinton’s] election makes her the first woman and only the second Black person to be speaker in the state’s history. With Kim Ward serving as president pro tempore of the Republican-controlled Senate and Debra Todd chief justice of the state Supreme Court, it’s also the first time Pennsylvania’s legislative and judicial branches have been led exclusively by women.[6]

The state Senate remains in white Christian nationalist hands.

Havana Syndrome

Suffice it to say, a lot of people who have suffered from ‘Havana Syndrome’ are not happy with the latest findings and the evidence is, ahem, ‘classified,’ so they can’t examine or challenge it.[8] That latter point is why I categorically reject ‘classified’ information as evidence. This simply doesn’t conform to the most elementary precepts of how science is done and has been done since the Enlightenment Era.[9]

Dylan Byers notes a precedent in Fox Business News’ sacking of Lou Dobbs, suggesting that the Dominion suit may lead to sackings of Sean Hannity, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro, with Fox Chief Executive Officer Suzanne Scott playing the role earlier played by Rebekah Brooks.[10]

From what I’ve seen Hannity has a following whose loyalty at least approaches Donald Trump. If Hannity is indeed sacked, I have to think it’s gonna cost Fox in a way that Dobbs never could.
