Pittsburgh Uber and Lyft drivers on strike

So-called ‘ridesharing’

One of the problems with organizing so-called “rideshare” drivers is getting the word out. I was unaware a strike was under way in Pittsburgh. It began at 3:00 pm Friday (February 10) and will end at 3:00 pm Sunday (February 12). Drivers are protesting pay cuts and a lack of safety.[1] I will, of course, be participating from here on out, even though I really can’t afford to.

The television stations reporting this did reach out to Uber and Lyft. The companies responded in their usual bullshit fashion and the stations did not challenge the responses,[2] so we’re really looking at he said, she said coverage. I’m pretty sure that the companies’ claims about driver earnings fail to account for the portion, now somewhere around 60 percent, they keep in various fees.
