Oh yes, there just might be an upper limit to the crazy in Pennsylvania:

Pennsylvania Democrats believe they have taken control of the state House for the first time in more than a decade, an outcome that was considered a long shot by even the most optimistic Democrats but that has not yet been confirmed by independent analysts.

Republicans on Wednesday said the declaration of victory was premature. They’re pinning their hopes on a handful of close races in the Philadelphia suburbs where the candidates are separated by hundreds — or in some cases just dozens — of votes.[2]

You can pretty much figure that abortion rights played a role here too. If, indeed, the Democrats have taken control of the chamber,[3] that proposed constitutional amendment to declare that there is no right to an abortion in Pennsylvania[4] would be dead in its tracks.[5]

There is a new blog post entitled, “The conundrum for white Christian nationalism.”

Some of [Donald] Trump’s allies have begun to express concerns that they may be backing the wrong person going forward. “This is a sinking ship,” a Trump aide said to ABC News.

“This was the end of the Trump era and the dawn of the [Ron] DeSantis era,” another Republican source said. “Like every other Trump catastrophe, he did this to himself with stupid and reckless decisions.”

According to CNN’s Jim Acosta, who spoke to sources with knowledge of Trump’s demeanor, the former president is “livid” over his endorsements losing and is “screaming at everyone.”

These reports were also confirmed by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who has reported on Trump for years.[6]

A jury had previously ordered Alex Jones to pay nearly $1 billion to families of Sandy Hook mass shooting victims that he defamed.[7] The judge just added nearly $500 million to that amount. Jones has filed for bankruptcy and plans to appeal.[8] A proper outcome would force Infowars out of existence.

Twitter

It just keeps looking worse and worse at Twitter.

Several top executives resigned from Twitter on Thursday, some of whom cited fears over the risks from Elon Musk’s leadership in a stunning exodus that prompted federal regulators to warn they might step in.

One of the most surprising was the company’s head of moderation and safety, Yoel Roth, who had become the public face of the company’s efforts to reassure users and advertisers that Twitter would not descend into a “free-for-all.” On Wednesday, he appeared on a Twitter Spaces public meeting to defend the company to advertisers alongside Musk.[10]

The departures began on the same day Elon Musk addressed employees for the first time, saying that “bankruptcy isn’t out of the question”, according to multiple reports.

The day began with the resignation of three top security officials – chief information security officer Lea Kissner, chief privacy officer Damien Kieran and chief compliance officer Marianne Fogarty – prompting warnings from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). (Twitter reached a settlement over privacy issues with the FTC in May.) Following those departures, [Yoel] Roth and Twitter’s head of client solutions, Robin Wheeler, also left the company.[11]

The privacy departures prompted a rare warning from the Federal Trade Commission, which has emerged as the government’s top Silicon Valley watchdog. It marked the second time in two days that a federal official has expressed concern about the chaotic developments at the company, coming less than 24 hours after President Biden said Musk’s relationships with other countries deserved scrutiny.

The agency said that it was “tracking the developments at Twitter with deep concern” and that it was prepared to take action to ensure the company was complying with a settlement known as a consent order, which requires Twitter to comply with certain privacy and security requirements because of allegations of past data misuse. Three of the resignations Thursday were by members of a data governance committee established in the FTC deal, according to a former employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.[12]

“So the two people Elon brought forward to talk with advertisers in an attempt to convince them to keep partnering with the company just quit,” tweeted Rashad Robinson, the president of Color of Change. “Companies that stay with Twitter at this point will be tied to these dangerous and unhinged policy changes.”[13]

Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis?

Donald Trump

Coup attempt

Fig. 1. Department of Justice photograph of seized materials, reportedly partially redacted, via the Washington Post, August 31, 2022,[1] public domain.

“Candidate quality matters,” Erick Erickson, a longtime GOP commentator, said of what he described as a disappointing showing for [Donald] Trump. “They weren’t good candidates. They had more allegiance to him than anything else. The GOP might still win both [chambers] but this is not the night they expected.”[2]

A disappointing night for most Republicans turned into a very good night for one Floridian. Gov. Ron DeSantis not only won a second term in Tuesday’s midterm elections but also did so by a sizable margin — even winning Miami-Dade County, marking the first time a Republican has taken that largely urban electorate in two decades.

The results cemented many expectations that DeSantis would run for president in 2024 — a situation that’s already sparking tension with another Floridian Republican, former president Donald Trump. And to some Democrats, the double-digit wins seen by not only DeSantis but Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio on Tuesday have firmly ended the chapter where the state could be seen as a swing state.[3]

The former president [Donald Trump] inserted himself into multiple contests, endorsing candidates at the primaries stage when parties choose their standard-bearers. The Trump seal of approval proved decisive in several, but just look at how those Trump favourites fared. True, the memoirist and venture capitalist JD Vance won in now solidly red Ohio, but in swing states Trumpers performed badly. An election denier who had been present at the 6 January Capitol Hill riot was trounced in the race to be Pennsylvania governor, while TV doctor Mehmet Oz, another Trump pick, was defeated in the Senate race by Democrat John Fetterman – even though the latter faced persistent questions about his ability to serve following a severe stroke in the summer.

Perhaps most revealing of the Trump effect was Georgia. Two Republican officials who became nationally known when they resisted Trump pressure to overturn the 2020 presidential count in their state were comfortably re-elected. But Herschel Walker, handpicked by Trump to run for the senate in Georgia, was in a photo finish for that all-important seat, one set to be decided by a run-off next month. Meanwhile, a Trumper in New Hampshire was soundly beaten, while another, Kari Lake, seemed to be trailing in what should have been a winnable contest in Arizona.

As Wednesday morning came, a pattern seemed to be emerging. Even Fox News reporters were quoting Republican sources telling them: “If it wasn’t clear before, it should be now. We have a Trump problem.” . . .

Cold, hard logic suggests Republicans should step away from Trump, a man who has now presided over three consecutive defeats in 2018, 2020 and 2022 (four if you include the two Georgia senate runoffs in January 2021). But it won’t be simple. For one thing, Trump’s defenders can argue that they do better when his name is on the ballot than when it is not – and it is true that Republicans did gain congressional seats in 2016 and 2020. But in some ways that underlines the problem. Because in a year when Trump himself is not a candidate, like 2022, his absence weakens hardcore Trump devotees’ desire to turn out, while his looming presence on the scene repels the floating voters who decide elections. Put another way, the Republicans’ problem is not simply Trump the man. It is that they have become Trump’s party.[4]

It appears that the new “conventional wisdom” is that the threat in 2024 comes in the form less of Donald Trump, and more of Ron DeSantis. Both are white Christian nationalists; DeSantis’ résumé[5] suggests be may be more competent and therefore an even more dangerous—in a number of ways—president than Trump.

[Ron DeSantis] claims to not be a fan of rules and big government. The Florida governor first came to real national attention when he pushed a controversial laissez-faire approach to covid-19. That approach put DeSantis at odds with World Health Organization guidance, even if it wasn’t quite as combative as [Donald] Trump’s move to pull the United States out of that body. (Most accounts of Florida’s time during the pandemic suggest DeSantis’s policies were neither the success he portrayed them as nor the disaster his critics feared).

Unlike Trump — who still has his reputation as a dealmaker at heart — DeSantis may be more rigid and less open to persuasion. Profiles have repeatedly suggested that he has little of the personal charm or interest in social functions that many politicians have. Any world leaders who would seek a bromance with this man may end up with a cold shoulder.

DeSantis is happy to use brash rhetoric and even cruel stunts to make his point. He has flown Venezeulean migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in a bid to own liberals and battled with Disney over gay rights — breaking with Republican orthodoxy to complain about corporate power. He has said France would fold if Russia invaded and sided with Elon Musk over Ukrainian leaders after the U.S. billionaire suggested Kyiv needed to negotiate a peace deal with Russia.

And while DeSantis appears to have accepted the reality of climate change’s likely impact on Florida, he has favored throwing money at climate adaptation rather than working to actually mitigate the problem.

As one critic recently put it, his plan has been “Hand out big contracts for patching up the impacts on pricey waterfront property while ignoring essentially everything, and everyone, else.” If the United States goes all in with that approach, it could impact everywhere in the world.[6]

Color me skeptical. First, DeSantis will need to win over Trump’s loyalists when, it seems, those loyalists won’t reliably turn out even for Trump’s endorsees.[7] Second, DeSantis, with “little of the personal charm or interest in social functions,” that Trump has[8] may lack the charisma to actually win nationally.

Fig. 2. Photograph by author, November 8, 2022.

Make no mistake. There is a hardcore segment of the U.S. electorate that was and remains infuriated by COVID-19 restrictions (figure 2) even as these have long since been lifted, that continues to interpret “freedom” as, among other things, the freedom to spread disease.[9] In Pennsylvania, they voted to curtail the governor’s emergency powers so they wouldn’t have to wear masks.[10] And there is certainly an overlapping segment of the population that relishes cruelty of the sort DeSantis displayed with unauthorized migrants;[11] they put bumper stickers on their cars and signs on their lawns that say “Fuck Your Feelings” and “Make a Liberal Cry.” Nearly all of these people support Trump. They would likely support DeSantis. But even in Pennsylvania, they didn’t get Doug Mastriano elected,[12] and I am not clear that this is a sufficient plurality nationally to put DeSantis in the White House.

When election security goes wrong

Whoops.

During what was largely a smooth election day in Allegheny County Tuesday, the Elections Court issued a cease and desist order to a group called “The Commission Security.” The order said members of the group were purporting to be poll security and prohibited them from traveling to or entering any polling places.

The security team was hired by a group called Pennsylvania Voice, which partners with more than 50 organizations, including Common Cause and Planned Parenthood, “working together to expand power for communities of color.” . . .

“Having six sheriff officers show up to a polling location actually serves the opposite of our goal,” [Salewa Ogunmefun] said, “and when we saw that happen, we pulled the commission from the field. It doesn’t make sense for us to create the situation that we wanted to avoid, which is people feeling uncomfortable.”

Ms. Ogunmefun said Pennsylvania Voice reached out to the Allegheny County commissioners, police, sheriff and solicitor before election day to inform them that the election team would be working in the field. She also said that a similar team operated in Allegheny County in 2020 with no issues, as did similar teams in half a dozen other Pennsylvania counties this year.[1]

Supposedly, all members of the team were unarmed and Black. Poll workers reported armed Black and white people.[2]

Unauthorized violence

Fig. 1. “A woman reacts at a makeshift memorial outside the Tree of Life synagogue following Saturday’s shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, Oct. 29, 2018,” photograph by Cathal McNaughton for Reuters, via ABC News, October 29, 2018,[5] fair use.

Between election news and the cruft of everyday life, I was way late getting out today. The first delay was picking up my laundry. I was on my way back from that when I saw two Allegheny County white supremacist gangster vehicles speeding with lights and sirens the opposite way on Washington Road.

Then I had to go up to West View to pick up a prescription that insurance snafus had led me to transfer to an independent pharmacy. This, of course, was a small package, so I went on line after I got back to my car.

My first passenger was a lady who had been in an accident, she said, in the Carnegie Library. There was an “active shooter” on the loose, the white supremacist gangster told her she needed to get the fuck out of there, and so she’d caught an Uber (not me), whose driver nearly ran into the same pole she did, up to a friend’s house in West View. It fell to me to take her from there nearly to West Virginia.

Those delays might have kept me well away from a shooting in Scott Township:

Allegheny County Superintendent Christopher Kearns said authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a fight on Cochran Road between the suspect and victim, who they said knew each other.

Police said the suspect followed the victim into the office and shot him in the foyer. After the gunman ran away, police launched a search and several buildings, including Mt. Lebanon and Chartiers Valley schools and a Catholic school in the areaa were locked down. About 2:30 p.m., police ended the search and started lifting lockdowns, although the suspect remained at large. Police said that because the shooting was targeted, they don’t believe the public is in danger.[6]

There are a couple issues here. First, an Uber was sent into an area with an “active shooter” (who has apparently still not been apprehended[7]) to pick this lady, who would later be my passenger, up. Second, there are way too many people fucking shooting at each other in Pittsburgh. (This particular shooting happened in an area[8] I generally consider completely safe.) And I’m out there driving strangers around. But oh yeah, Uber wants me to feel safe doing so,[9] when the reality is I’m anything but and indeed that driving for Uber has to be about the stupidest thing a person can do in Pittsburgh.

Gentrification

Fig. 1. The old Hazelwood library branch. It has been replaced with a new branch on Second Avenue. Photograph by author, May 1, 2020.

So a funny thing happened recently. I had heard that a Giant Eagle would be shutting down in the Shadyside neighborhood. I thought of the one on Centre Avenue, which seems usually pretty busy.

I was thinking of the wrong Giant Eagle. The one that shut down is near the intersection of Penn Avenue and Shady Avenue. The building has been razed and the parking lot dug up.

It seems that a new Giant Eagle “Market District” store and apartment complex will be going in there.[10] Shadyside is, for the most part, an upper middle class or better neighborhood but this complex is going in right across Penn Avenue from the gentrifying East Liberty neighborhood[11] and I guess the “Market District” stores are upscale, though supposedly some of the housing will be “affordable,”[12] whatever the fuck that actually means.

Twitter’s blue check is really part of a much larger problem

Twitter

Fig. 1. “Elon Musk shared a video of his entrance on his Twitter account.” Photograph attributed to Elon Musk, October 26, 2022, via the New York Post,[1] fair use.

The company’s blue check mark had become a point of contention among some Twitter users, who saw it as a symbol of classism. Mr. [Elon] Musk played into that, calling the subscription blue-check rollout as a “Power to the people” move.[2]

This is an example of what makes me really grumpy. Elon Musk does have a point about the blue checks. Who qualifies, who doesn’t is indeed arbitrary.[3] When I looked, a few years ago, into who qualified for the blue check, I felt I qualified, but the company disagreed.

But the blue check also indeed served as a signifier of authoritative information,[4] even if from sometime dubious sources: Donald Trump enjoyed the blue check status on his account, for example. And in a context of rampant misinformation and disinformation, this matters. It’s really all part of a much larger problem and fiddling over who gets a blue check really doesn’t touch that.

Competitive authoritarian regime project

Voters in several battleground states have rebuked state-level candidates who echoed former president Donald Trump’s false claim that the 2020 presidential race was rigged, keeping election deniers from positions with power over the certification of future presidential election results.

But dozens of other candidates who denied or questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 vote are projected to win seats in Congress.

At least 143 Republican election deniers running for the U.S. House had won their races as of Wednesday morning, ticking past the 139 House Republicans who objected to the counting of electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021. . . .

As of Wednesday morning, more than 165 of 291 election deniers identified by The [Washington] Post were projected to have won, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Rep. Greg Pence (Ind.), the brother of former vice president Mike Pence. Another 40 races had not been called. . . .

Winning candidates for governor, secretary of state and attorney general will assume offices with significant power overseeing American elections. Unofficial projections Tuesday showed that election deniers will amount to a sizable majority within the House Republican caucus, with enormous sway over the choice of the nation’s next speaker should Republicans claim control of the chamber. The speaker would in turn preside over the House in the 2024 election cycle, when the presidential vote could again be contested.[5]

Donald Trump

Coup attempt

Fig. 3. Original: The White House. Derivative work: J. J. Messerly, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

Amid the wreckage of Republican hopes for a sweeping midterm victory, party activists are looking to cast blame, and the former president will likely receive much of it — for good reasons.

Two candidates whom [Donald] Trump hand-picked for Senate races — Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and Herschel Walker in Georgia — lost or trail in states where Republicans had high hopes of winning. The Trump-endorsed Blake Masters in Arizona is also badly behind. Their failures may hand Democrats another two years of control of the Senate, although the final outcome may not be known for days.

Even in the races where they won, candidates whose nominations Trump helped secure ran well behind other Republicans. In Ohio, for example, J.D. Vance took 53% of the vote in defeating Rep. Tim Ryan to hold that state’s Senate seat for the GOP. Other Republican candidates for statewide offices won roughly 60% of the vote. . . .

In 2020, a big part of Trump’s effort to overturn President [Joe] Biden‘s victory involved trying to bully Republican lawmakers in battleground states into either blocking the vote count or simply declaring Trump the winner of their states’ electoral votes.

Those maneuvers failed in the last election, thanks in large part to a handful of Republican legislators who resisted Trump’s pressure, like the speaker of the Arizona House, Rusty Bowers, who was defeated in his primary this year as a result of his defiance.

Trump’s allies have made clear that they would try the same tactics again in 2024 if they could.

But Tuesday night, Republicans lost control of several legislative chambers that would be required to make that ploy work.

In addition to Michigan, Democrats also appear likely to win control of one house of the Pennsylvania Legislature, which Republicans have controlled for decades. And control of Arizona’s Legislature remains uncertain, with many races still undecided.[6]

Pennsylvania

2022 election

Zionists will be unhappy with Summer Lee’s victory:

United Democracy Project, a political action committee tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, spent nearly $1 million in the final stretch of the campaign to air ads attacking [Summer] Lee. That prompted more than 240 members of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community to issue a public letter supporting Lee.[2]

Final results are not in, but Republican predictions of a “red wave” have failed to materialize,[3] and it appears the wildcards[4] I pointed to, abortion and Donald Trump, are having an impact in staving off,[5] at least for now, a white Christian nationalist competitive authoritarian regime nationally (it will be another story entirely, however, in some states[6]).

Republican voters were most motivated by inflation; Democratic voters were most motivated by abortion.[7]

In Republican-leaning Kentucky, an amendment explicitly stating that nothing in the state constitution creates a right to an abortion is projected for defeat with an estimated 86 percent of votes counted. Abortion rights groups took credit for a “historic win” in a press release at 12:08 a.m. this morning.[8]

Donald Trump

Coup attempt

Fig. 3. Original: The White House. Derivative work: J. J. Messerly, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

The former president spent the final days of the campaign lashing out and even threatening Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose apparent interest in running against [Donald] Trump has puzzled him, according to advisers who spoke on the condition of anonymity to reflect private conversations. The Florida governor didn’t return fire, other than to hold his own campaign event on Saturday, competing with a Trump rally in Miami and further irking the former president.

Come election night, however, it was DeSantis holding the ebullient victory party, having won reelection in a 20-point landslide, almost 15 points better than Trump’s 2020 margin in their shared home state. At the party, DeSantis’s supporters chanted “Two more years!” — encouraging the governor to seek the presidency before finishing his second term. . . .

“Trump candidates were a drag on the party and the messaging of all our candidates,” said Bill Palatucci, a member of the Republican National Committee from New Jersey and Trump critic who said Democrats wanted to send a message against Trump and his supporters even though he wasn’t on the ballot. “We were constantly having to distance ourselves from their support of the former president.”[9]

Competitive authoritarian regime project

Among the more than 150 election deniers projected to have won by midnight: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Rep. Greg Pence (Ind.), the brother of former vice president Mike Pence.

But some of the most outspoken election deniers sustained defeat in races that had been seen as winnable for Republicans when the year began, including Doug Mastriano, who lost his bid for Pennsylvania governor. . .

The speaker would in turn preside over the House in 2024, when the presidential vote could again be contested. . . .

Some of the most prominent election deniers on the ballot this year included state-level office seekers who would have broad power to influence the administration and possibly the outcomes of future elections: Kari Lake for Arizona governor, Jim Marchant for Nevada secretary of state and Matthew DePerno for Michigan attorney general.

All have offered unqualified support for Trump’s false claims of fraud in 2020. DePerno helped Trump try to overturn the result by spearheading unfounded claims that Dominion Voting Systems machines in Michigan had flipped votes from Trump to Biden. Lake has said her opponent, Democrat Katie Hobbs, should be jailed for certifying Biden’s Arizona victory. Marchant has promised to decertify Biden’s 2020 victory in Nevada and wants to impose hand counts across the state.

No winners had been projected in those races as of 1 a.m. Wednesday.[10]

In an election that was the Republicans’ to lose, they’re not doing so hot

I’m publishing now. There are some early results here and the message I’m seeing pretty consistently is that a predicted “red wave” has not materialized though they’re all still expecting the Republicans to take the House of Representatives and nobody’s calling the Senate.

It’s no longer just a claim by intelligence agencies based on classified data: Russia has interfered in U.S. elections and continues to do so with the aim of affecting Ukraine policy

Ukraine

I think y’all know I reject “classified” information as evidence. I have to be able to see evidence to evaluate how well or how poorly it supports an argument. Without being able to see it, it does not and cannot count. And so it was with an intelligence community consensus that Russia had interfered with U.S. elections.

This situation improved considerably when Robert Mueller filed charges, which filled in a lot of detail and assembled a case.[2] But the accused, not having been extradited to the U.S., have not had their day in court.

Now we have an utterly voluntary confession:

Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Monday he had interfered in U.S. elections and would continue doing so in future, the first such admission from a figure implicated by Washington in efforts to influence American politics. . . .

Prigozhin, who is often referred to as “Putin’s chef” because his catering company operates Kremlin contracts, has been formally accused of sponsoring Russia-based “troll farms” that seek to influence U.S. politics. . . .

In October, after Ukraine’s successful counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region, Prigozhin issued a statement calling for Russia’s military commanders to be stripped of their medals and “sent with assault weapons barefoot to the front”.

In September, he admitted to founding the Kremlin-aligned Wagner Group mercenary firm, which is active in Syria, Africa and Ukraine. Prigozhin had previously sued journalists for reporting that he was linked to Wagner.

Last Friday Wagner opened a defence technology centre in St Petersburg, a further step by Prigozhin to highlight his military credentials.[3]

The Reuters article does not make clear what his previous goals have been in interfering with U.S. elections but he now intends to influence Ukraine policy.[4]

A possible white Christian nationalist squeeze on Ukraine

Ukraine

Fig. 1. “Destroyed Russian military vehicles located on the main street Khreshchatyk are seen as part of the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine in Kyiv, August 24.” Photograph by Gleb Garanich for Reuters, August 24, 2022,[1] fair use.

Ishaan Tharoor warns that if Republicans do as well in the midterm elections on November 8 as many expect, they may very well put a squeeze on funding for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, in part because many of them feel much more of a kinship to the likes of Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán than to the cosmopolitan West.[2] I’ve been back and forth on this prospect as illiberal politicians have done well electorally in Europe and as I have been cautiously optimistic that Republicans might be headed for defeat in the midterms.[3] Right now, with the midterms a day away, the best I can say is that it’s nail-biting time.

But of course, the risk isn’t just on the right. As Tharoor notes,[4] there are tankies, who favor any imperialism as long as it isn’t U.S. or North Atlantic Treaty Organization imperialism,[5] even among so-called progressives in Congress,[6] and, as I have discovered to my horror, among leading figures in the Green Party in the U.S., lending support to a claim that support for the Green Party is in fact support for Republicans,[7] and thus white Christian nationalism.

As I look at the many yard signs for John Fetterman (the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate) and Josh Shapiro (the Democratic nominee for governor) even in areas of southwestern Pennsylvania where I would not expect to see them, however, and as I see the still-near-total-disappearance of yard signs and campaign flags for Donald Trump, I have to suspect that the forecasts of a Republican takeover in the House of Representatives may be overblown;[8] these forecasts, whether optimistic or pessimistic, are, after all, based on a bogus non-methodology (polls with single-digit response rates[9]). But I think the tankies’ betrayal affects my intuition perhaps even more than white Christian nationalism itself: I feel a deep unease now on many issues, certainly not just Ukraine.

Elon Musk now has egg on his face. The question is how bad it will get and whether Musk will ever perceive through his narcissistic delusions to understand that the egg is there:

Some of those who are being asked to return [to Twitter] were laid off by mistake, according to two people familiar with the moves. Others were let go before management realized that their work and experience may be necessary to build the new features Musk envisions, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private information.[2]

Musk’s move to give verified user status to anyone paying for a Twitter Blue subscription had attracted considerable criticism, due to the potential for users to impersonate authoritative sources of information.[3]

The social-media company received internal and external feedback that the verification process for its Twitter Blue program could be ripe for abuse, according to one of the people, who asked not to be identified. That raised concerns that candidates and other political actors might be impersonated on the site in the days before the US election.

The delay is the second major reversal of measures that new owner Elon Musk put in place to stem what he said were daily losses of $4 million a day.[4]

After a weekend where several high-profile users changed their names and pictures to match Elon Musk’s, Twitter’s new owner says the social media platform will crack down on the practice.

“Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying parody will be permanently suspended without warning,” Musk wrote in a Twitter post.

“Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning,” he said. This will be “clearly identified” as a condition for signing up to the company’s paid subscription service Twitter Blue, Musk said. He added that any name change at all will cause temporary loss of a verified check mark.[5]

I have opened an account on Tribel; it appears to be the least awful alternative to Twitter.
