The Wall Street Journal catches up[6] with what I saw at California State University, East Bay, especially in my latter years there (I finished my Master’s degree in 2009), with an expensive building spree that coincides with an increasing emphasis on filling teaching positions with poorly-paid adjuncts. And of course, as the Journal notes (and is far from the first to do so), rising tuitions mean more student loan debt. Oh yeah, and relatively few of those athletic programs that are ever more prominent at universities actually pay for themselves.[7] Y’all know I’m a strong advocate of a liberal education, but this crap ain’t it; it needs to fucking stop.

No, I wasn’t expecting to compete with a Ph.D. in Pakistan who’ll work for $4 per hour

Fig. 1. The spectre of Death, in the form of a large skeleton, rises with the smoke and flames of the burning Asch Building during the Triangle fire, as people jump and fall to their death. Artist unknown, from International Ladies Garment Workers Union Photographs (1885-1985) at The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives, via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0.

It shouldn’t even remotely have been a mystery. In my continuing, desperate, and hopeless job search, I had signed up with Upwork. There are a lot of kids wanting help with their homework, for not a lot of money, there, and I was so suspicious that the openings I seemed suitable for were almost all college kids wanting their assignments written, that I didn’t bid on many of them.

But now I know why I could not and will not get any traction there: If a U.S. parent can find a tutor there with a Ph.D. in mathematics for $4 per hour,[1] I simply cannot compete.

The trend means a different type of American worker faces overseas competition. While factory workers have seen U.S. jobs move overseas for decades, many types of service workers were more protected because, until recently, the jobs were done in person.[2]

Of course, capitalist libertarians think this is wonderful:

The option of outsourcing could help the U.S. economy by alleviating domestic-worker shortages, said Scott Lincicome, a trade expert at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.5% in July, near a half-century low, the Labor Department reported Friday. In June, there were 3.6 million more open jobs in the U.S. than unemployed Americans seeking work.[3]

And I still can’t get a fucking job. Capitalist libertarians doubtless think that’s wonderful too. I have closed my account on Upwork (yes, it was a paid account).

The key is, the world is getting more competitive and that’s really good as long as we keep our own house in order and keep competitive here.[4]

I hear all this “free” (always ask, “free” for whom, to do what, to whom, at whose expense) trade bullshit, but can somebody please explain how I’m supposed to live on $4 an hour when my landlord wants to raise my rent to $1000 per month on a 300-square foot apartment in Pittsburgh?

Even if this is true, I don’t think it’s going anywhere, but I’m wondering if Donald Trump is doubling down on losing the criminal cases against him, on a theory that such losses will rally his support, with the idea that he wins the presidency and pardons himself.

One problem is that the timing is off: He will likely be able to stall any conviction until after the election anyway, when he thinks he can pardon himself for any convictions that have occurred and order the Justice Department to drop remaining federal charges, and when he likely can get the Georgia agency that handles pardons to pardon him. Hence James Risen’s elevation of the hush money case as possibly the one conviction, assuming it is to be had, that might stick.[1] Another is, while, yes, it’s way too fucking early to make such prognostications, it still really and truly looks like Trump cannot win the general election; pundits who say otherwise pay too much attention to opinion polling and not enough attention to the self-imposed constraints on Trump’s support,[2] which would mean that a Georgia pardon is the only one that might be in Trump’s pocket. Finally, there is, of course, that issue of self-pardoning, which, as has been widely reported, pits a doctrine that “no man may be a judge in his own case” against the fact that this doctrine has never been tested in the courts.

As I say, I think the issue is moot. Trump won’t win. And, for now at least, I’ll believe a Georgia pardon when I actually see it.

Julia Ioffe’s report this time is, in broad strokes, unsurprising. I’ve been hearing about an “Israel model” for a while. It’s worth reading anyway because she details some rationale[2] that I don’t think you’ll find explained elsewhere.

The good news on the latest charges against Donald Trump is that the judge will not be Aileen Cannon. The bad news is that while it would practically be a given that Trump will complain that Tanya Chutkan is biased against him anyway, this is a Barack Obama-appointee who has already previously issued (justifiably) harsh rulings against Trump,[3] and who will therefore draw additional suspicion.

I don’t know that that suspicion amounts to anything. One of my questions is how far Trump’s lawyers can go in accusing Chutkan of bias. Another of my questions is how Trump’s supporters react to what are being widely reported as the most serious charges yet.
