Fast water

I do not even know how to categorize this dysfunction:

I’m critical of my father for his abusive interpersonal relationships; he destroyed lives, including my own.[1] But as an engineer, there can be no question he meant well. I don’t know that he saw the specific problem of streamlining riverflows making water run faster and thus enabling it to undermine bridges[2]—he committed suicide in 2000, certainly long before I’d first heard of it—but I’m sure he would have.

Heroes work here? Guess what? They don’t feel like heroes

I have fully explained what’s gotten me so pissed at Google that I will never again deal with the Google Store, never again buy a Pixel, and never again use Google Fi as a carrier in a new blog post entitled, “Customer disservice and the Google ecosystem.” No one, under any circumstances, should tolerate the idiocy that customer service seems increasingly to be descending to.

COVID-19 Pandemic

Doctors and charlatans

I was on my way to an Uber order when I reached an intersection that offered a vantage point on an elevated walkway between two buildings very near the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian Hospital. It had, in big bold letters, “HEROES WORK HERE.”

I’ve not been impressed by such empty language as we’ve been treating a lot of those “heroes” as expendable workers.[1] And I’ve heard again and again from medical workers about their fury over COVID-19 denial. Platitudes, such as “HEROES WORK HERE,” could hardly be expected to remedy the psychological toll of such a highly politicized three-year-old pandemic on people who actually work with or near patients who are actually suffering from the disease.

While Jennifer Abbasi does not mention the politicization or the denial, she reports that many physicians and nurses are leaving or have already left their practices. Burnout and feelings of hopelessness abound. And platitudes won’t help.[2]

Ukraine

I obviously disagree with Serhiy Leshchenko, whom Julia Ioffe interviews, about the possibility that Vladimir Putin will launch a nuclear war. Even if he is right that one man cannot do this alone,[3] Putin has plenty of sycophants at the Kremlin.[4] Surely, he can count on some of them being in the right place to help push that metaphorical red button.[5]

Leshchenko argues in favor of further U.S. support. Diminishing the risk of a nuclear World War III is part of that argument.[6]

But I would argue differently. I would argue that U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization dithering does not diminish the risk of World War III. You can argue that Putin needs a victory and that failure to achieve it in Ukraine will result in escalation.[7] You can argue that Putin’s ambitions extend far beyond Ukraine and onto NATO territory and that a Russian victory in Ukraine would merely whet Putin’s appetite for more. Neither argument diminishes the risk. And I still do not see a way that that risk is diminished short of Putin’s removal from power, which still seems wildly improbable.[8]

When war is inevitable, we might as well get on with it. And I think it’s inevitable.

Important update to contact information

The short version is that you should make sure you update my contact information in your contacts data.

The outcome of yesterday’s attempt to obtain customer service was that the Google Store support folks sent me, once again, to the Google Fi support folks, really an encore of the performance that had wasted an hour of my time already. My disgust was overwhelming.

I realize the phone has been getting rave reviews. But upon my return to my previous phone, a Samsung S21 Ultra 5G, I was struck by how stable it seemed. There was one point where I think the Internet connection failed, but this was almost certainly due to AT&T’s service for the car’s hotspot. Also, I think the GPS works better.

Supposedly I have unlimited data with AT&T, which is the vendor that supplies Internet connections to so-equipped Toyotas, but in practice, they rate limit me hard. This has been a point of frustration: My Pixel 6 Pro was flaky with Internet connections but so too is the Internet connection I have in the car. While I’m driving for Uber, the last thing I want to be doing in traffic is debugging Internet connections.

Because the S21 Ultra 5G doesn’t take an eSIM for Google Fi, and because I was unhappy with Google Fi anyway, and because when I was having a problem with cellular data connections, it didn’t seem to be that Verizon was failing, and because I don’t in any way want to be subsidizing this appalling customer service, I decided I don’t need that backup connection as badly as I did in California and decided to terminate it.

So there is revision to my contact information. The Google Fi number, which was originally my AT&T number before AT&T’s customer service pissed me off, is now gone. There are two things that are unlikely ever to be in my life again: Pixel phones and Google Fi.

Actually I think it might have been high school. But it was for sure by high school.

Got that second COVID-19 booster today

There is a new blog post entitled, “We are monsters.”

I finally managed to get my second COVID-19 booster. The glitches that bedeviled my previous attempt to schedule one seemed still present, though I got a bit farther with the Walgreen’s scheduling this time—only I did not receive a confirmation, leaving me somewhat skeptical that I had actually succeeded in scheduling it. As it turned out, I had indeed failed.

Looking at the listed plentiful available time slots, however, I suspected they’d be able to fit me in if they weren’t just being all bureaucratic about it and, sure enough, they did. I have previously received the Pfizer shot, but I was aiming for the Moderna shot this time because I suspect there is some benefit to mixing vaccines.[1] The Moderna shot also appears to be more effective.[2]

Other folks trying to do something similar, please note: Walgreen’s does Pfizer at some locations and Moderna at others. If you want a particular shot, you need to be fussy about location accordingly.

There was ache as she injected the vaccine and if I rub my hand over the site now, roughly eight hours later, it’s still sore. Otherwise I’m fine. But I very much expect that you should expect your mileage to vary.

It’s not just that I’m (well) over fifty and therefore eligible.[3] It’s that as an Uber driver, I don’t know the vaccination status of anyone getting in my car and they often decline to wear masks. Uber continues to require masks, but this is a policy I don’t dare enforce because passengers retain the ability to retaliate against me.[4]

In other news:

This is an absolute catastrophe for me as an Uber driver especially as I’m currently trying to raise money to pay my taxes. I need a properly functioning cellphone just like I need a properly functioning car. This tweet generated a response that seemed relatively intelligent, however, so we’ll see how it plays. It’s possible I may be doing something like driving to Chicago to get a replacement because I just can’t wait for FedEx Stupid to get it to me.

So Donald Trump endorsed[5] the carpetbagger from New Jersey[6] who’s running for the U.S. Senate race.[7] From what I can see of the yard sign race, John Fetterman retains a huge lead, especially around Erie. I did see my first Dr. Oz yard sign today.

But really, about now, I’d have to say around Pittsburgh the big action is in the Pennsylvania governor’s race where about the only yard signs I see are for the very, very Trumpist Doug Mastriano.[8] I don’t even know who’s running on the Democratic Party side.

There’s nothing new that seems particularly enlightening on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, since the last issue.

Ukraine

Suffice it to say, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has not gone well.[1] I return to the theme of idiocy[2] in a new blog post entitled, “A self-defeating idiocy.” A portion of this post was initially published as an update to two previous blog posts.[3] Those updates have been replaced with a note pointing to this new post. The text in the new post has been revised and extended from the earlier updates.
